Is Your Microwave Really Safe?Microwave Experiment Starts

…you know that it didn’t show any harmful effects of watering plants with water that had been microwaved. Still, I’m planning on giving my microwave up.
I’ve had a microwave for about 15 years. I’ve mostly used it to warm up leftovers. Now that I’ve become much more focused on real food, I find myself less and less happy with the idea of microwaving food – convenient as it may be.
Why I prefer to err on the side of caution:
Lots of new technologies appear and are proclaimed to be safe. And some of them are. But it isn’t easy to figure out what kind of damage a new technology is causing.
Take, for instance, x-rays. For many years, they were assumed to be perfectly safe. So safe, in fact, that it was common to x-ray feet in shoe shops using a fluoroscope.

Read more about it here. I’m sure no one thought twice about using x-ray radiation every time they bought shoes. Today, we know that radiation is dangerous and avoid it. But before the danger was discovered, it was used in shops for 40 years!
As a rule of thumb, I prefer to use cooking processes and materials that have already stood the test of time. I choose to play it safe. I haven’t yet made all the changes I want in my kitchen, but I’m slowly getting there. I’m still using that microwave once in a while, but its days are numbered!

Mine, too. I only use it occasionally to warm up left overs but I can live with out that convenience. The big thing I'll miss will be heating up my rice bag!
I agree. Someone once said, "When in doubt leave it out". I haven't used a microwave for over 15 years...I don't miss it one bit! :-)
Sounds like a good idea to me, Ruth. I wish I could, but DH would be sad, and I won't do that to him. I almost never use it, though. But, oh, yes, my rice bags! On these cold nights I take 2 of them to bed with me. MMmmmmmm.........
I think I've used my microwave twice in the past two months. I found that I can reheat most things in my 8inch skillet on the stoe, and it makes just the right portion size for me :)
For me, the attraction of the microwave is having to wash fewer dishes, and I HATE to wash dishes.
If I've have some leftovers in a plate or a plastic container (another thing I want to phase out) and I warm it in the microwave, I don't have to wash a pot or a pan. And sometimes I can eat it out of the thing it was warmed up in. That's the only thing I'll miss when I say goodbye to my microwave.
Thank you so much for your post, our microwave is sitting out to be taken to the trash! :)
p.s. more counter space....a plus!
My dad still likes to use the microwave once in a awhile to defrost things...I don't. I prefer letting things defrost naturally, or reheating things on the stovetop. Love and hugs from the ocean shores of California, Heather :)
Transitioning off the microwave at our house was a lot easier than I anticipated. I bought a toaster oven and never looked back. I use it to reheat everything! Meatloaf, mashed potatoes, veggies. Obvioulsy, the only thing I can't reheat is soup-like dishes, but I suck it up on those occasions and get the pot dirty. If I am the only one eating, then I will eat the soup right out of the pot so I don't have to clean an extra bowl!
Of course, to keep my toaster oven clean, I've had to depend on another evil substance, foil, but I can't avoid every demon out there all the time. At least I'm not being nuked anymore! I don't know how I lived so long without my toaster oven! Last night I baked potatoes in it instead of turning the big oven on. And my friend, who lives alone, cooks her entire meal in hers. Neither one of us can figure out why we didn't buy one sooner!
Microwaves suck!! :)
I quit using my microwave over a year ago and haven't looked back since. I bought a new toaster oven to heat up leftovers and even bought one to have near my desk at work and to send to the sitter's so she could heat up my daughter's food. I have done enough research on it to make the choice pretty simple and have absolutely no regrets. Plus food tastes so much better heated up in the toaster oven anyway, even if it may take a little longer.
Right, Laura. When it comes to taste, there's no contest. Texture too. I hate the rubbery feel of some microwaved foods.
